Junior Dragsters OK'd for Thunderball.
31st March: Junior Dragsters have been cleared to make exhibition runs at the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod Raceway this weekend.

A week ago it seemed that the Juniors would have to wait until May for their debut, but we understand that strenuous efforts were made by the RAC-MSA drag racing representative to obtain clearance for exhibitions.

At least one Junior Dragster will be appearing at Santa Pod this weekend, that of Paul Lindley-Allen.

Easter Thunderball preview
30th March: The first race of the season in the UK, the Easter Thunderball at Santa Pod Raceway this weekend, is the first round in both the UK National Drag Racing Championship and the RAC-MSA British Top Alcohol Championship. The entry list is, of course, subject to late change but here is a brief preview.

The Top Alcohol Dragsters of Peter Beck, Doug Bond, Smax Smith, Rob Turner, and the Redstone and Gleadow TAD piloted by Dave Wilson, and the TAFC of Lex Joon will be racing together in the British TA Championship (unlike the FIA Championship where TADs and TAFCs race separately).

The DJB Showtime and Shockwave Fuel FCs driven by Bill Sherratt and Gordon Smith respectively will be match racing.

The first round of the Championship in Pro Mod sees Gordon Appleton, Alan Cook (in his 1963 Corvette recently purchased from IHRA racer Tim McAmis), Nick Davies, Bert Englefield and Andy Robinson vying for the honours.

On the Sportsman side there are particularly healthy entries in Super Gas (16 cars), Pro ET (18 cars) and Sportsman ET (15 cars), with a lot of new names listed. Super Pro (5 cars), Super Comp (6 cars) and Super Street (4 cars) are less well-subscribed although again there are some new names in evidence.

The first round of the Custom Car Street Eliminator, for street-legal cars, has attracted eight entries including Colin Lazenby's nine-second Chevy. In the Volkswagen Championship, VW Modified has six entries, VW Super Street also has six entries, and VW Street has three entries.

Four Top Fuel Bikes have entered, including the new entry of ACU Championship co-ordinator and regular Eurodragster News contributor Ian King, and the TFB of Brian Johnson who puts in a rare visit to the UK before running a full season in the US.

Pro Stock Bike sees ten entries, with Paul Willis having stolen a march on the rest of the field with a 7.98 in testing at SPR on Sunday. Funny Bike has attracted eight entries, and Super Street Bike thirteen entries including the new bike of 1998 10.90 Champion Matt Nixon. Six Comp Bikes, fifteen 9.90 Bikes and six 10.90 Bikes complete the field.

Rounding off the field is Martin Hill's ever-popular Fireforce Jet Funny Car.

The Thunderball runs from Saturday to Monday of this weekend (3rd-5th April), with action commencing at 10:00 on Saturday and 9:30 on Sunday and Monday. Tickets are £13.00 for Saturday, £15.00 for Sunday, and £17.00 for Monday. A Sunday-Monday ticket is £25.00, and a three-day ticket is £35.00. Children under 16 get in free, as they will throughout the season at SPR. More details from Santa Pod Raceway on 01234 782828 (outside the UK +44 1234 782828).

Eurodragster will be posting on-the-spot reports and pictures on each day of the race. We shall post a link to these reports at the weekend.

The quickest Junior Dragster?
29th March: Those of you who followed the RWYB reports from Santa Pod Raceway yesterday will have seen the write-up of Paul Lindley-Allen's 9.68/65.51 run in his Junior Dragster, which we reported as the quickest JD run in Europe.

Pete Teurlings, Crew Chief for Gerd Habermann Racing in Germany, writes to correct us. He says: "Our Junior Dragster, sponsored by germany.net, and driven by Marcus Habermann, ran 108.959 kmh (66.84 mph) in Gross Dollin, Germany, on 5th September 1998, and ran 9.595 at Alteno, Germany, on 30th August 1998. Marcus has also run 9.23, but did not back it up".

Thanks to Pete for the information, and apologies to everyone at Gerd Habermann Racing for the error. Hopefully it will not be too long before we see a European Junior Dragster Championship so that Paul and Marcus can sort it out on the track!

16th March: Thanks to Ron Clark for this obituary for Jack Bynum, who died last weekend:

Jack came over here (the UK- Ed) as crew chief to Paula Murphy's STP funny car in July 1973. It was this car that made history by becoming the first American funny car to traverse the quarter in this country. The car stayed on after the return of Jack & Paula to become the first Houndog funny car. It retained the cartoon caricature of 'Fat' Jack on the bodywork, later evolving into to one of Nobby Hills, whom I'm pleased to report is recovering well from his blast injuries sustained just before Christmas.

"Jack's passing co-incided with the weekend of running of the 40th annual Bakersfield March Meet".
