UK National Championship for 1999?
31st December: Drivers and riders will shortly get the chance to vote upon a UK National Drag Racing Championship for 1999. The proposed Championship, formulated by the promoters and racers' clubs of Santa Pod Raceway and Avon Park Raceway, will consist of eight rounds, four at each track. The classes involved are Pro Modified, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Sportsman ET, Pro ET, Super Pro ET, 10.90 Bike and 9.90 Bike.

The Avon Park rounds will be contested at that track's 1999 Super Series meetings, although the Super Series continues as a separate contest in its own right.

The Championship structure and other issues, such as concerns over the current chassis regulations, are to be discussed at a drivers' and riders' meeting at the Guild Hall, Northampton, at 1:00 pm on January 24th 1999. The vote on the Championship will take place at that meeting.

More Pomona pictures.
20th December: A very tenuous link for what is a European drag racing site, but UK web site Tog's Drag Racing Page is the temporary home of US drag racing photographer Bob Frye's photographs from the Winston Finals at Pomona Raceway. Bob Frye is employed by NHRA to photograph races at Pomona for NHRA Online and also produces the Quicktime Movies on NHRA Online throughout the season. Click here to view Bob's photographs.

Sharkman's Top End Tales to see what Sharkman made of his first US drag race.

Alan Wigmore dies.
12th December: Eurodragster was very sorry to learn of the death of Alan Wigmore, after a long illness. Alan had been involved with UK drag racing since its very early days. In a long and distinguished career Alan drove the "Itzaviva" Chevrolet-powered Vauxhall Viva, co-founded and chaired the National Drag Racing Club, commentated at NDRC races, and wrote about drag racing for NDRC News and other publications.

Eurodragster extends its deepest sympathies to Alan's family and friends.

A Gainesville tale.
4th December: Monique Pels writes to tell us that the first-round battle between Roel Koedam and Brian Johnson wasn't quite as straightforward as it seemed from our report on
November 23rd. She writes: "Brian was way ahead of Roel and indeed ran the 6.3 E.T. but he hit the timing equipment at the finish line. That's why Roel's E.T. (as recorded) was also a 6.3, but in fact it is unknown. Brian was dis-qualified because of hitting the lights, so Roel got on to the semi-finals."
Thanks, Monique.

Cooky's not-a-Dodge.
4th December: UK Pro Mod racer Alan Cook has sold his Dodge Avenger, and is now the proud owner of IHRA racer Tim McAmis' 1963 Corvette Pro Mod. The car ran 6.48 seconds at 214 mph during 1998 although Alan will obviously work up to these sorts of figures through the season.

At least one new ICE mountain motor will be added and Alan's team will be half of an all-British two-car effort having joined forces with Rob Loaring and Nick Davies, Nick running an Oldsmobile Cutlass. Rob will tune both cars and apply the nitrous systems. Mike Savage (from No-Name racing) will be added to Cooky's crew for 1998 and, no doubt, the two Cook sons will shoulder additional responsibilities in what is a family operation.

Jens quits - official.
3rd December: Eurodragster can now confirm the sad news that Jens Nybo is to quit drag racing due to lack of financial backing. "It is a very difficult decision but I cant keep running this operation in a serious way without a bigger financial back up from sponsors, and that's very hard to find in Denmark as in every other country, especially because we can't race here," says Jens.

Starting drag racing in Super Stock in the early 80's, Jens spent a short time in Top Alcohol Funny Car, before buying a Top Alcohol Dragster in the early 90's. He graduated to Top Fuel Dragster in 1995, winning the European Championship in his first season. The following year Jens won the first FIA European Championship.

Jens would like to say thank you to all the fans who have supported him throughout his dragracing career and he plans now to spend more time on indoor karting and on his carpentry business.

The whole operation is now for sale, either complete or separately. If you're interested in owning a Top Fuel Dragster, contact Martin Boye on +45 75 62 63 88 (daytime) or fax +45 75 62 63 41.
