25th October: Staying with Pro Mod for a while, in an effort to cut through the confusion surrounding Ronnie Bergstrom's claimed European Pro Mod record, Eurodragster sought opinions from as many interested organisations as possible.
Svensk Dragracing and the Nordic Pro Modified Association both said they had no opinion on the matter, with Svensk adding that they believe the sanctioning body of the country in which the event was held should decide on any record. The Pro Modified Racers Association said that "the car was deemed illegal at this meet by the British P.M.R.A."
Peter Todd of the RAC Motor Sports Association, the sanctioning body of the competition in which Ronnie was competing, wrote "I have now consulted with the MSA Steward of the event held at Santa Pod on 11-13 September and would confirm that the MSA is not aware of any Record recognised by the MSA being achieved at the event. I would also confirm that no official Protests were received at this event."
That, then, would appear to be the end of the matter. If the sanctioning body doesn't recognise a record, then I guess there can be no record. But the fact remains that Ronnie Bergstrom ran 6.585, backed up with a 6.637 (look at the timing data on TonyB's web site). No official protest was received. Ronnie was not, as far as we are aware, disqualified and that 6.585 appeared on the qualifying sheet, giving Ronnie the #1 position. So the question of precisely why the record is not recognised by RAC MSA remains to be answered.
We have still to hear from Santa Pod Racers Club. Perhaps their response will cast some light on the issue.
Please note that Eurodragster neither supports nor refutes Ronnie's claim to the record. We are simply seeking a clear decision on the issue and the reasons for that decision, on behalf of many puzzled drag racing fans across the continent. We feel that leaving questions like this unanswered does the sport no good whatsoever.
